How to Prepare for Moving Day (Without Losing Your Mind)
5th of May 2025

You’ve booked the movers, packed the boxes, and now the big day is coming fast. But moving day can go from chill to chaos real quick if you’re not prepped right. Here’s everything you need to know to make the day smooth, stress-free, and drama-free.
1. Pack Like a Pro
- Label boxes — what’s inside and what room it belongs to.
- You can make use of the linen by wrapping fragiles before packing in boxes. Make sure all fragile items are securely wrapped and stacked inside the boxes. Vibrations while in transit can cause things to break and movers have no control of that.
- Use a system like “Fragile" or labeled with the rooms they belong to make unpacking easier, saves double handling and also alerts the movers not to stack on top of fragile boxes.
- Don’t overload boxes — it slows movers down and risks breakage and boxes splitting open
- Plastic snap lock containers are awesome to use for packing and can be reused time and time again..
- Make sure fridges are emptied and washing machines are drained
- Keep small valuables with you for example jewelery boxes.
- Pro Tip: Pack a personal “Day 1” bag with chargers, clothes, toiletries, and snacks so you’re not digging through boxes.
2. Clear the Access
- Driveways, stairwells, and doorways should be completely clear.
- If you’re in an apartment, book the lift and tell the neighbours.
- Let movers know if there are steep driveways, tight turns, or low-hanging trees.
3. Sort the Kids & Pets
It's a great idea to get someone to look after pets or young kids during the move they can get stressed and in the way. It also takes the stress off you
4. Do a Final Sweep
- Check cupboards, wardrobes, under beds — the forgotten zones.
- Turn off lights, unplug appliances, and take photos of utility meters.
- Keep keys, remotes, and paperwork in one place for handover.
5. Be Ready When Movers Arrive
- Aim to be fully packed before your movers show up.
- It saves time and sometimes costs if you can have all the boxes and items stacked in one room of the house close to the exits for easy load up. For example lounge or garage.
What Not to Do on Moving Day
- Don’t pack hazardous stuff like gas bottles, paints, or flammables.
- Don’t disappear without telling your movers.
- Don’t forget to hydrate and eat — you’re no good to anyone hangry.

Here’s a breakdown of what professional movers typically do — and what they’ll expect from you to help keep things on track.
What You Can Expect From Your Movers
- Punctuality: They’ll show up on time or notify you of delays.
- Proper equipment: Think dollies, straps, blankets for protection of large items, and the right-sized truck.
- Safe loading: They’ll protect your furniture and pack the truck efficiently and securely.
- Heavy lifting: Furniture, fridges, beds — they’ve got it.
- Delivery & unload: Movers will unload where directed at your new place.
- Making your move day an easy, exciting and pleasant experience.
What Movers Expect From You
- Be fully packed (unless you’ve booked packing services).
- Clear all access areas — hallways, driveways, lifts.
- Let them know in advance about any big, bulky, or awkward items.
- Keep pets and kids out of the way on moving days. As much as we love them they can get under your feet.
- Stay reachable and onsite — communication helps a lot.
- Have your payment ready as agreed in the quote.
Common Misunderstandings
- Movers typically can’t transport hazardous items.
- Disconnecting gas, electrical, or plumbing is up to you.
- Most movers won’t take out your rubbish or clean your house.
Quick Tips for a Smoother Move
- Give movers a quick walkthrough when they arrive.
